The roots of the Metropol Cinema lie in 1959, when the trend-setting cinema in Innsbruck on the Innbrücke was opened by the grandfather of today’s managing director Mario Hueber, Ferdinand Purner. Even then it set new standards and was one of the few cinemas in the world to have stadium seating. In 1982 the cinema was extended by one auditorium and in 1991 by another 2 auditoriums to what was then the largest cinema centre in Western Austria. In 1997, the building was converted into the current multiplex cinema with 8 auditoriums and the largest cinema hall in Western Austria. The Metropol Cinema was the first cinema in Austria to bring 3D to the screen and conquered the mobile market in 2011 with a cinema app for iOS and Android. In 2015 Dolby ATMOS was installed in the largest auditorium. In 2016, the entire buffet, foyer and box office area was redesigned and in 2017 a new lounge area with a “Starbucks on the go” corner was opened. This was also followed by the expansion to 9 halls with the first couch hall in Western Austria. In October 2019, the Metropol Cinema brought the world’s leading 4D cinema technology to Tyrol with the 4DX auditorium, the perfect cinema experience with all senses. The METROPOL CINEMA has welcomed over 15 million cinema-goers since 1959.
